[Personal Statement]

One of the proudest accomplishments of my life was earning my college degree at one of the best universities in my home country, South Korea, in spite all the different types of discrimination I have gone through. Just because I am Asian living in ***, and just because I had eight years of foreign experiences, I was scoffed at as a total outsider. People’s barrier of jealousy could not win over anything but going to a top-ranked college in Korea, as Korea still had academic factionalism. I poured out my absolute commitment toward going to the top-ranked college in Korea; I wanted to show them that I was an ordinary person just like them. Happily, I was able to step a new fresh start at K** University where prejudice I experienced was nowhere to be seen. My smiles started to bloom again.

[Statement of Purpose]

I still remember the exciting moment when I read an article on how gut microbiome controls the human nervous system and behavior. I knew that microbes would somehow affect the human diet as numerous of them act as the “real engines” inside the gut, but I have never thought that gut microbes can direct human health and behavior.
